Anglo-German Remembrance Service

Anglo-German Remembrance Service, St Nicholas Churchyard, Thorney Island on Saturday 14th September 2019.

This Service is hosted by the Royal British Legion each year. The County President and County Officers attended along with several Standard Bearers as well as drummers and a bugler.

The churchyard itself has a Commonwealth War Graves area with Second World War dead from Great Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Germany interred there.

Our cadets played a small part by acting as a wreath party, holding the wreaths for the military and civilian dignitaries until it was time to pass them over to be laid at the main stone. The names of the dead from each country are then read out.

Reconciliation is the key theme at this Service, everyone present is now part of the same military alliance. They were paying their respects to their dead from a darker period in history which, for some, is still in living memory.

A unique, moving occasion.

Capt Gaffney.
