At CHS, every pupil in Year 7 and Year 8 are taking part in the Accelerated Reader scheme provided by Renaissance Learning.

Accelerated Reader is a programme that helps teachers manage and monitor children's independent reading practice.

All pupils complete an on-line reading assessment and have a book level range with suits their ability. Once a pupil has finished reading a book, they complete a short comprehension quiz on a computer in school.  The quiz results give the pupil and the teaching staff feedback based on how well they have done in the quiz, which in turn will help staff to monitor the pupil's progress.

All pupils have opportunities to read within the Accelerated Reader scheme during the school day.  As with any skill, performance improves with practice, so pupils are expected to read for at least 30 minutes every week at home.  Every child has a reading log book to note what they have been reading, and the quizzes they take.
We ask parents/guardians to check this record weekly.

Every half term,  tutors will celebrate the achievements of pupils who have completed a book and successfully taken a comprehension quiz, and pupils who have reached their points target. (Each pupil has an individualised points target based on their reading level and achievement). A Star Reader is rewarded for their effort. In House assemblies every term, a trophy is presented to the Tutor Group Champions, who have read and quizzed on the most books. Reading Millionaire badges are also presented to pupils who have read more than one million words.
