Mathematics (Ma)

Exam Board and Specification: Edexcel GCSE Mathematics 1MA1

Aim

Maths is fun and challenging!

Mathematics is a creative, logical and problem solving based subject which sits comfortably across all curriculum areas as well as in life outside school in general. It is critical to science, technology and engineering as well as being necessary for personal finance and most forms of employment.

At Chichester High School we ensure that all students are given the safe environment and opportunities you need in order to reach your own potential. You will be able to gain the understanding required to effectively communicate in an analytical, mathematically reasoned and evidenced way. We recognise that each student is an individual and that all students not only have the potential but the right to be successful.

We appreciated the beauty and power of mathematics and hope that you will find our sense of enjoyment and curiosity to be infectious.

Content

All students will be given the opportunity to work towards achieving two GCSEs by the end of Year 11. Firstly they will continue to develop their fluency understanding of Mathematics so that they can achieve at least their target grade in GCSE Maths. The functional nature of the subject is studied throughout the course

The most industrious mathematicians will also be given the opportunity to study towards a higher level Maths qualification, such as Further Maths.

Students are expected to bring to every lesson all the normal mathematical equipment and a scientific calculator.

Assessment

GCSE Maths is assessed by a terminal examination only.  This examination consists of three papers, one without a calculator and two with a calculator.

There is no coursework.
