Exam Board and Specification: Edexcel GCSE Business 1BS0
The course aims to introduce you to the world of small businesses and you will look at what makes someone a successful business person. You will find out how to develop an idea and spot an opportunity, and turn that into a successful business.
You will understand how to make a business effective and manage money. You will also see how the world around us affects small businesses and all the people involved.
You will study two units of work:
Unit One concentrates on the key issues and skills involved in enterprise. It will provide you with the framework to consider the marketing, financial, human and operational issues involved in starting and running a small business.
Unit Two examines how a business develops beyond the start-up phase. It focuses on practical methods used to build up a business, with an emphasis on aspects of marketing, customer service, financial and people management. It also considers the impact of the wider world on the success or failure of a business.
The course is very varied and wherever possible effort is made to take you outside the classroom to visit the real world of business. The course is based on active learning, critical thinking and student- led investigation.
At the end of Year 11, you will be assessed by two externally-examined papers which are equally weighted towards the final grade.
Each paper consists of a 1 hour 30 minute written exam. The questions will be a mixture of multiple-choice, calculations, data response, short-answer and scenario-based questions.
Tasks will be varied but students will be expected to complete one piece of homework per week. Tasks may include written work, reading a newspaper article, researching information on a particular business or watching a business related TV programme.
