Poetry by Heart

Chichester high school india pascoal lawrence copyIntrepid students entered the National Poetry by Heart competition again this year and we were treated to recitations of poems as diverse as 'The Burial of Sir John Moore after Corunna' by Charles Wolfe to Wendy Cope's 'Proverbial Ballade'.

Students once again committed a lot of time and effort into learning two poems by heart one being a pre 1914 poem and the other a post 1914 poem.

The performances were admirable.   The winner of the school contest, India Pascoal-Lawrence, recited her two poems with feeling, showing an understanding of the poet’s meaning and in a tone which befitted the both humorous and solemn nature of her chosen poems.

The runner up Arwen Linfield-Haplik also gave an impressive performance making the judges’ decision a difficult one.

India will now be entered into the County round via a video of her performance.

Good luck India!
