World Book Day 2017

CHS’s World Book Day events kicked off with a visit from local author Jane McLoughlin.

Jane worked with Year 8 pupils on how to approach creative writing and especially how to write frightening situations and characters. 8A3 enjoyed the session so much they are carrying on with their spooky stories in their next lesson.

On the 1st March, the wonderful Storyteller Jamie Crawford visited Year 7 to help us with our World Book Day celebrations.

His storytelling mesmerised the students and we received lots of positive comments from Year 7's about his performance.

Jamie explained to the students the origins of many of his tales that have been handed down over the centuries by word of mouth and often across continents.

The Year 7's loved Jamie's facial expressions, voices and the way he uses his body in a physical way to bring the characters in his stories to life.

He succeeded in making the audience laugh, think and 'jump out of their skins'!

It is so important that we celebrate literacy in all its forms and Jamie Crawford demonstrates how important the oral or speaking aspect of this is.

The final event in our World Book Day celebrations was a visit from the author Christi Daugherty.

Christi gave two fascinating talks about her career in crime journalism in the USA, her involvement in the world of counter terrorism in London and her eventual move to become a full time fiction writer.

The pupils were gripped by her amazing life experiences and many went away inspired to have a career in journalism or MI5.

Congratulations to Tyler in Year 9, Christi thought he asked the 'best' question and won himself a signed book.
