Ricardo Slot Car Challenge

Ricardo winnersChichester High School students have recently participated in STEM events organised by Brighton University.

The Slot Trucks challenge, a popular STEM Sussex event, funded by IMechE Automative Division Southern Centre and hosted by Ricardo at their Centenary Centre in Shoreham-by-Sea took place on Thursday 28th March.

Eight students from year 9 took part and competed with other schools in a Slot Car Challenge event. Competitors gained a Bronze level CREST Award for taking part.

Ricardo automotive STEM Ambassadors were on hand to help the students throughout the activity and were available to talk to regarding their study and work aspirations.

Students were split into two teams of four, and used Scalextric components, including a motor, wheels and pre-cut chassis and body which they fitted together and modified Our two teams, had just four hours to design and build an electric slot car that had to compete under a number of challenges.

The engineering challenges were:

· The slot car should be capable of carrying a weight up a steep hill

· The slot car should be capable of carrying a trailer and ring a strategically placed bell

· Design work showing team work, design solutions and dimensions.

Marks were awarded for time, course completion, aesthetics and teamwork.

The team consisting of, 4 of our Year 9 pupils; Daisy Barclay, Megan Thwaites, Lauren Conway and Hannah Goulding came FIRST! 

We are so proud of these young women leading the way in Science.
