Headteacher Update 30.06.23

Alaric govan sml picTonight, our Year 11s will be celebrating the end of a very busy year in the form of the Year 11 Prom, which is being held at Fontwell. I’m looking forward to seeing all of the students turn up at approximately 6pm smartly dressed and excited to make a grand entrance in whatever mode of transport they have hired out for the evening. My daughter went through this two years ago and I remember how excited she was by the whole occasion (she is also excited about her Year 13 Ball which is taking place tonight). I’m sure it will be a brilliant event.

Next week, we welcome in the new (with two days of Year 6 induction on Monday and Tuesday) and say goodbye to the old (with the Sixth Form Prom on Friday). The end of summer term is always like this - we plan lots of celebratory events (for example Sports Day in two weeks time), whilst planning for the new academic year.

The end of an academic year is also an opportunity for the school to reflect on what has gone well and what needs to be improved for the following year. That involves me completing the school’s Self Evaluation Framework (SEF) which is a reflection document, and then planning the School Improvement Plan (SIP) which sets out what we will be focusing on from September. My broad priorities are these:

  1. To improve student attendance. Attendance since the end of COVID has been much lower nationally and locally. If students are not in school, we cannot educate them.

  2. Improve behaviour around the school, inside and outside of lessons. We have completed a lot of work in this area, improving punctuality to lessons, working with staff and students to improve behaviour in lessons, and increasing staffing around the school to make break and lunchtimes calmer. But there is lots more work to do.

  3. Improve teaching and learning in classrooms. Again, we have spent a lot of time in training sessions focusing on improving teaching and learning. Two weeks ago, we started our first ‘Deep Dives’, which is when staff go into a department area to look at the quality of teaching and learning, the work being completed by students, and asking students how teachers help them to learn in these lessons. The plan is to see all subject areas over the course of the year, involving teaching staff so that they can see what is going on around the school.

  4. Improving communication. I know that this needs to be better and I am working with staff at the moment to look at how we communicate with parents/carers and children, so that you are better informed about what is going on. As part of this communication plan, I intend to ask for parent/carer feedback at the beginning of next term (to include the new Year 7 parents/carers) so that we can work together more productively.

As part of this parent/carer consultation, I would really appreciate you completing the survey below. I will use this feedback to help me plan for next year. I will also write to you again (at the beginning of September) to give you the findings and let you know what we will be doing to address any concerns. A similar survey will be completed by students in school over the next two weeks:

I hope you all have a good weekend.
