The Talent Foundry come to CHS

We were incredibly fortunate this week to have facilitators from The Talent Foundry come to CHS to run workshops over three days with groups from years 7 and 8.

The Talent FoundryThe purpose was to use their maths skills and knowledge and apply these to a real-life context, which in this case was organising a large-scale music event.

It was wonderful to see students working together, combining their ideas and present these to the rest of the group.

The main aim was to increase student confidence and appreciation for maths through enrichment and we certainly achieved this with many students being impressed with how frequently maths is used.

This maths-linked in-school workshop will give students the opportunity to act as large-scale event organisers in charge of arranging a pop concert for 10,000 young people.

Using maths 'by stealth', students will analyse the information available to help them make informed decisions about which artists they can afford to hire for the concert and how to arrange the respective stage layouts.

As well as the concert, students will be also asked to consider the event’s catering and much more!

The workshop links mathematics to real life in a natural way and presents students with an opportunity to develop their mathematical skills and knowledge in addition to developing their softer skills such as communication, resilience, and teamwork.

The following curriculum linked areas will be covered (amongst others): profit and loss, budgets and wages, 2D and 3D shapes, averages, data, and more.
