Love Through the Ages

Our Head of English, Ms Hodson writes…

On a chilly November day, I marched about 20 Sixth Form students around London in search of the elusive Institute of Education, having already forced them to cope with the idiosyncrasies of the Tube. Why did I do this? In pursuit of ‘LOVE’.

I had managed to secure tickets to a Conference for A Level students from across the South-East; a conference led by AQA examiners giving advice on how to ensure their examination performance will be ‘tip-top’.

With University places at stake students are keen to know what is going to put their responses head and shoulders above the rest. Therefore, presentations on avoiding ‘lazy English’, Shakespeare’s verse and love, as it is presented in 19th Century fiction, meant lots of furious note-taking as strategies and ideas were shared by the experts.

A highlight was a presentation by Wendy Cope OBE who filled the room with laughter and tears as she shared some of her own poetry about love. Here’s her ‘A Vow’ for the delight of all readers.


I cannot promise never to be angry;
I cannot promise always to be kind.
You know what you are taking on, my darling –
It's only at the start that love is blind.
And yet I'm still the one you want to be with
And you're the one for me – of that I'm sure. 
You are my closest friend, my favourite person,
The lover and the home I've waited for. 
I cannot promise that I will deserve you
From this day on. I hope to pass that test.
I love you and I want to make you happy.
I promise I will do my very best.
