Behaviour Policy and statement of behaviour principles

Dear Parents/Carers,

I would like to thank you for supporting the school with our uniform and mobile phone policy over the past half term. At CHS we place an emphasis on pride in our community and feel a visible indication of this is the standards of students’ uniform and the way they conduct themselves in lessons and around our school. The great majority of our students are always dressed in the correct uniform and take pride in their appearance and conduct themselves respectfully. It is these students that tend to flourish in school and exceed expectations in all facets of school life.

However, there is always room for improvement and I feel there are some areas that need to be clarified and strengthened to further improve the climate for learning in school. Therefore from Monday 25th February when pupils return from half term a very clear behaviour policy will be in place that will support the learning of all pupils and fully support our young people become the excellent citizens I know they will be. Our uniform and mobile phone policy will continue;

  • Mobile phones and headphones are not allowed in lessons or around school. Additionally, these items should not be seen in between lessons. Mobile phones may only be used before school, and after school. Mobile phones must be switched off and put away as soon as students come through the school gates.
  • Non-uniform items that are worn or used in or around the school will be confiscated and kept in a secure place to be collected at the end of the day from the Pastoral Hub:

            -Hoodies/sweatshirts/headphones/mobile phones

-Facial piercings are not permitted, this includes nose studs. Any such piercings must be covered. I would ask that piercing of this nature occur during the summer holidays so that they are fully healed and ready to be covered

In addition to this we will be sanctioning poor behaviours that do not support a positive climate for learning by:

BEHAVIOUR

Within lessons pupils will be given clear verbal warnings:

  • Warning  1- ‘’(Name), please do not do that (be explicit) talking when I am talking ‘’ Refer to our positive climate for learning poster.

Pupils are expected to:

Behave in an orderly and self-controlled way

Show respect to members of staff and each other

In class, make it possible for all pupils to learn

Move quietly around the school

Treat the school buildings and school property with respect

Wear the correct uniform at all times

Accept sanctions when given

Refrain from behaving in a way that brings the school into disrepute, including when outside school and when using public transport to and from school

  • Warning 2- ‘’ I spoke to you about (be explicit) and now I am giving you a formal warning, because….and for disrupting the learning’’

At this point the student’s name can be written on the board- ‘’(Name) if there are any further instances of lesson disruption in this lesson you will be set a detention.’’

  • Warning 3- ‘’(Name) I have given you previous warnings and your behaviour continues to disrupt and break are our positive climate for learning policy. You now have a 30 minute detention after school (see appendix 3).
  • Warning 4-Any further disruption-class teacher may choose to use on call. On Call will speak to the teacher and pupil and will then remove the student to sit with a member of staff, from that department to sit in their classroom.
  • A 1 hour detention will be set by the class teacher.

Class teachers will visit the student during the after school DT.

Further disruption in this second classroom setting will result in the student being taken to the restorative room where they will remain for the rest of the day.

Classroom discipline is the class teacher’s responsibility in conjunction with the Teachers’ Standards and School Behaviour Code of Conduct.

All pupils set 1 hour detentions (repeated disruptive behaviour) will be monitored by Mrs Lewry in conjunction with SLT and Heads of Houses.

If this behaviour continues, Heads of House will contact parents regarding the repeated disruption and internal isolation, internal exclusion, or external exclusion will be used as a strategy to support the student in adopting a positive attitude to learning.

I would be very grateful if you could take a few minutes to read our uniform and behaviour policy in more detail on our website: www.chs-tkat.org

Thank you in anticipation of your support in this matter.

Yours faithfully
